“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest steps of your life.”

This month also marks our 1 year anniversary at Bone and Body Women’s Health!

If you are reading this newsletter,  you are part of our practice and larger women’s health community feeling empowered to achieve optimal health at midlife and beyond.

Every day at Bone and Body Women’s Health, I am motivated by my patients who are amazing in their accomplishments, daily activities and responsibilities. The goal of our practice is to put women and their health first. We all know the competing demands we have on our time and health.

Over this past year I am honored to have continued relationships with many of my beloved patients, welcomed many new patients and grew our outreach in the Northshore community through referrals from trusted colleagues and friends.

Many of you know, Susan Rivera and Karen Villaneuva who are instrumental to the success of our practice. Working hard behind the scenes or greeting you at the front desk. They truly are the best “work family” I could ask for.

Now for house-keeping details:

As summer and then fall rolls around many patients will be up for membership or bone health consult renewals.  You will be receiving an email from our office and through Hint Health a month prior to your membership or bone health consult renewal date. This is not an automated renewal. It requires action on your part. As always, our team is here to answer any questions you may have. The membership and bone health consult prices will remain the same and we are proud to have maintained high quality direct care that prioritizes women’s health with many opportunities for education.

Our summer event will be a virtual program with Northwestern sports medicine physician, Dr. Cherise Russo on Monday July 29th from 6:30-7:30PM CST. Please join us as Dr. Russo reviews common sports injuries in women. A timely topic for summer to keep us moving and injury-free!

Stay tuned for our October member event , a “lunch and learn” lecture with esteemed gynecologist, author and menopause and sexual medicine expert Dr. Lauren Streicher. She always mixes education with humor.  More details next month about the upcoming event.

Lastly, I will be spending August 10-17th in the woods of Maine with my family. My fabulous staff is here if you need to reach us.

Dr. DeSapri in the news:

This month I gave many academic lectures, with the highlight being Ground Rounds at Hospital for Special Surgery ( HSS) in NYC about Updates in Osteoporosis Management for Midlife Women and Addressing Medication and Treatment Adherence at AMGA conference.

Midlife must know! Speaking of sports…

What we know: Frozen shoulder (or adhesive capsulitis) is common amongst postmenopausal women. And often this seems to come out of nowhere! However, the loss of estrogen can lead to decreases in collagen fibers and tendons that increase inflammation and stiffness.

Symptoms include shoulder pain that can radiate down the arm, decreased range of motion or pain with daily activities. Typical evaluations can include Xray’s, MRI to rule out other causes. However, this can also be diagnosed by history. Personalized physical therapy can help.

What’s good to know?

Women treated with HT have lower rates of frozen shoulder. And often steroids and other interventions are given before connecting frozen shoulder as a possible menopause symptom.

What does this mean for me?

Joint pain ranging from knee to shoulder are common. There is a laundry list of possible causes, however being a postmenopausal woman isn’t usually on the list.

I see many women and well-meaning clinicians who don’t equate joint aches and pains to low estrogen states. We have many ways to treat joint pains and sometimes a combination of PT, treating and rehabbing injuries and hormone therapy ( after an educated discussion) are all options.

As we enter year 2 at Bone and Body Women’s Health with enthusiasm and energy fueled by our mission to reach more women in midlife and beyond, we look forward to welcoming and prioritizing your care.

See You Soon!
